Where do our teams practice?
We practice at Plex Indoor Sports, an 86,000 sq. foot state-of the art facility located in the newly built Sandhills Plaza in NE Columbia. Since opening its doors in 2004, Plex has become home to SC Midlands Volleyball serving both as a MECCA for volleyball training as well as a prime location for statewide tournaments. In addition, this first class facility was the training ground for the 2005 Men's and Women's USA Volleyball Open Nationals Championship teams.
When does club volleyball take place?
Club volleyball tryouts normally begin in late October and early November and the season runs through the end of March or beginning of April. Elite Teams train and compete through Nationals and/or AAU Nationals in June or July.
How often and when do teams practice?
Elite and Performance teams practice 2-3 times a week. Regional teams will practice twice per week. Practices are from 1 ½ - 2 hours. Kids Power practices once a week.
Can you play other school sports during club season?
Yes, but we ask that you communicate those commitments (and any other social commitments) during the tryout process. We encourage athletes (especially the younger ones) to play multiple sports, and we try to create an atmosphere within the club to support that. However, in fairness to all club members, missed practices could affect playing time in tournaments. We also encourage athletes to make up any missed practices by coming to another team's practice on a different day.
Is club expensive? How much does club cost?
Club volleyball is expensive, especially for the Elite and Performance levels. Our club fees include training, gym time, tournament fees, coaching costs, and USAV membership for coaches and players. Fees that are not included are tryout fees, as well as uniforms and equipment and travel expenses to out-of-region tournaments.
Is it worth it?
If you want an honest answer, just ask our players and parents. Many of them will tell you that the increased skills, the enhanced abilities, the greater levels of confidence, as well as the newly acquired lifelong friendships are PRICELESS. In addition, imagine going back to your middle or high schools KNOWING that you have received great training, and KNOWING that you are more equipped to become an impact player. Imagine the effect this will have on your entire school season. In addition, for Elite and Performance players, exposure to college recruiters could lead to future college scholarships. With college expenses at $35,000 per year at many colleges and universities, club volleyball could definitely be worth it!
What is the best option for my child, Kids Power or a younger Region Team?
Age, ability/skill level, and the level of exposure that you are looking for all factors to consider when choosing the right program. Kids Power provides exposure and is a very basic introductory level. Practices are approximately once a week, and participants in this program take part in about two Kids Power Tournaments as well as a culminating tournament in March. Younger region teams may be slightly more advanced, but since they are young too, there may not be too big of a gap. At the 12's and 13's level though, players with limited experience can normally make at least one of our region teams. Region teams practice twice a week and then participate in 4-6 full day tournaments throughout the season.
I am trying to decide between a Region Team, a Performance Team or Elite team. Which is my best option?
Region teams are formed for various ages and skill levels 10U through 18U. This option is popular for players who are looking to get more training and competition beyond their school season. The Performance Team level is for those players who want an additional day of practice each week and are interested in challenging their skills outside the region. These players may be interested in playing in college after high school. The Performance experience is similar to the Elite experience but with a shorter season. On the other hand, Elite teams are for those whose goal it is to play at the collegiate level, or for those who are willing to commit to helping others achieve this goal. Most Elite players have had at least two to three years of prior club experience as younger players and five to six years of experience as older players. They are generally the stronger leaders of their school teams. They are committed to a full club season, December-July.
How many players are normally on a team? Teams normally consist of approximately 9-10 players. We do our absolute best to keep this number at 10 or below, thus maximizing chances for more playing time and more exposure.
What can I expect from joining SC Midlands Volleyball?
The more a player touches a ball, the more they improve. Players who join SC Midlands Volleyball will receive the extensive hours and training in the various skills. For newer athletes, participation in our program significantly increases their chances of making a middle and high school team. For the experienced player, participation in our program becomes a necessary component for continued growth and success.
How is team placement handled?
One major difference in our club, is that we place players on teams by skill level, not necessarily by age. This means that a talented younger player can play up in an age division so that she is challenged by others with similar talent. We can assure you that the tryout system we use is fair and accurate. There will be players who are on the border between being placed on a higher or lower team. If a player is the 7th, 8th, or 9th player on the team, they could be the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd player on the next team. There are advantages to playing on a lower team—more playing time, being one of the top players verses being one of the lower players, self-esteem, etc. Our coaching staff evaluates each player and makes placement decisions.
Are teams, or team lineups, kept the same from year to year?
No, teams from previous years are not necessarily kept together. Each year talent is re-evaluated. Things change over the course of time. Some players who might have been on the sidelines the previous year, might make strides to earn a starting position the following year, and some who started previously, might not necessarily play all the way around the following year.
Is it possible to have more than one Elite or Performance Team per age group?
Can players be moved or added to a team after initial teams are assigned?
Yes. We prefer not to move players, but reserve the right if the need occurs based on team needs such as player talent, loss of players, players joining later in the season, and other factors. We reserve the right to merge teams if the need arises.
How are tuition payments for club handled?
All tuition payments for SC Midlands Volleyball are made out to "Plex" and are to be deposited to the front desk. Be sure to retain a receipt.
How do we stay informed regarding club news?
Each club player and parent is expected to view the club web site and check his or her e-mail on a daily basis. If an athlete or parent does not have an e-mail address, it is the responsibility of that athlete, or parent, to pair up with another member of the club (and/or team) and so that he or she stays informed of all club news.
